This is a house I was asked to work on by the owners Jim & Sherry Burles, who
found me on this web site. This is a cute old house that
they restored.
They wanted to replace the plastic gutters (shown in this first photo) with nice sturdy copper gutters that work. They had hidden downspout inside the front porch columns. This may seem clever, but very impractical when things start going wrong, as they always do. I later photos below you can see the mildew stains down the side of the columns from the old downspouts that leaked before entering the hole in the columns. |
|
Their Daughter painted the electric meter box. I thought this one of the cutest things I had seen. |
|
Just before starting on their project they asked me to make them 3 custom scuppers and cover some of the rake edge boards with copper instead of working to strip them for repainting, to dress up the front and left side of their house. Here are some shots of the scupper fabrication made from some copper gutters. |
|
Here is the front 'L' shaped gutters and scuppers getting mounted: You can see the mildew stains down the column from the old downspouts that leaked before entering the hole in the column here in the right photo below. This shows the special mitered end caps option I did for this job. Here is some photos taken a couple months later after some tarnishing. It also shows the copper patch I made to cover the old downspout hole in the column. |
|
They wanted a ridge cap to help with the moss control. I tried to add a little style to the end. I also made some copper fascia metal covers for the dormer above and to cover the rafter tails below |
|
Here is the back gutters East side. They had me cover the dormers with brown aluminum gutters to save some cost, since they would not be seen much. |

This is the back West side gutter and the dormer above: |

David,
Hey
again wanted to thank you for the great job, they are functional as
well as a work of art. We were sitting in the backyard yesterday just enjoying them, and they really finish off the house (even make the battered shingles on the west dormer look better).
One
thing I wanted to check is when you finish the screens and the other
minor dormer wraps were you going to extend some of the down spouts
on the dormers so they are closer to the metal on the roof? The copper one on the west side is great, but noticed some of the other outlets are still pretty high up on the dormer, so just wanted to double check on that.
Thanks again, Date: Thu, 8 May 2008
David,
We
just got back from vacation, and I saw the finish work and it looks
great as usual!! I sent the payment just today for the remaining
(from our bank), so you should get it in a few days (it’ll be an
electronic check from wells
Thanks again for all your hard work, and we will/are recommending
you to others we know. Jim and Sherry |

In 2017 they had me make them some copper work for their kitchen. |
